Overview

Situated on a flat site in Mt Eden, our clients wanted a garage for their use and an adjoined minor dwelling. It was a passion project where they wanted to push the boundaries of what a small house could provide

This project used prefabricated structurally insulated panels to give it a phenomenal insulation rating, making it a passive house requiring very little energy to heat and cool.

The cladding was a thermally treated African pine by Rosenfeld Kidson

Challenges

We endeavor to constantly upskill with our knowledge of new products. This was our first time using SIPS panels which required us to learn about the supply, installation and performance. Navigating a tight inner city site with Hiab and concrete trucks took careful planning and communication with surrounding residents. Our other more difficult challenge was dealing with Auckland Council. Although these SIPS panels are not new technology, there was still some careful negotiations that needed to take place between ourselves and the council to get this job over the line.

The Solution

Our motivated team was able to learn quickly to efficiently construct the house as per the requirements and satisfy the building inspectors concerns. The attention to detail on this job was paramount for our clients as it was such a small space, every square centimeter was on show and had to be utilised.
